Stamford Mercury - 1978 Service to College Youth Centre Mr Tony Wilkes was presented with a pen set from staff and members of the Uppingham Community College Youth Centre, in recognition of the ten years service he gave to the young people who have attended the centre. He worked with junior and senior members of the centre in numerous capacities, from Sunday soccer for the seniors to helping the juniors run their own coffee bar. Also at the presentationwas Mrs Wilkes who, as Mr Adrian Haigh (Youth Tutor) remarked, had supported the evening and weekend work Mr Wilks had been doing. Mrs Brigit Lewin presented Mrs Wilks with an azalea.
Current staff in attendance were Mr Derek Janes, Mr Richard Owen and Mrs Jane Rogers, who was just starting her work as a leader at the centre. Former members were represented by Mr Kevin Jones of Lyddington, who said "thank you" on their behalf. College Principal Mr D Whight also thanked Mr Wilks and a letter of thanks was presented on behalf of the Youth Centre Management Committee. Best wishes were given by Mr Bruce Westwood, head of Community Education, and Mr G R Payne, further education advisor for North East Leicestershire. Mr T Wilkins, a close friend, as well as a working colleague for several years had sent his best wishes, as he was attending a Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme presentation in Melton Mowbray that evening. Mr Wilks is head of PE at the College.
