Rutland and Stamford Mercury - 1977

Uppingham notch eighth success

UCC cricketers are beginning to monopolise the Mercury Shield competition. In nine years they have won Rutland Schools cricket league eight times. Since 1969 they have relinquished only once (1975) when they were pipped by one point by CCC. And as nine members of this seasons winning team will be eligible next season they must stand a good chance of continuing their run for at least another year.

Back Row - G Dalby, D Baines, J Waters, I Binley, J Clark, G Green, T Couzens and T Wilks
Front Row - M Jackson, N Adcock, A Morris, A Waters, M Pusch and P Green

Besides Uppingham and Casterton, Oakham Catmose and Stamford Exeter School take part. Normally each team plays six games on a home and away basis, each being allowed 40 batting overs. This season Uppingham completed only four games as first fixture problems and then a coach breakdown prevented their opponents arriving.

But in their four games Uppingham won their first three, defeating Oakham at home and away. Casterton beat Uppingham at Uppingham. Uppingham individuals deserving mention are Mark Stone who scored 75 runs in the competition and Adam Waters who took 11 wickets for only 59 runs, also Ian Binley (17 wickets for 58, including 7-10 against Casterton)...
